What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a holistic form of complementary medicine, aiming to treat the whole person, rather than just the physical symptoms. It is based on the following principles:

• Like cures like. According to this theory, substances that are capable of provoking certain symptoms in an otherwise healthy body can also act curatively on similar symptoms in a sick person . For example when a stinging nettle stings healthy skin a burning, stinging red rash erupts. The remedy Urtica urens is made from nettles and is used to treat skin problems, which exhibit red, burning rashes.
• The Minimum Dose. The remedy is taken in an extremely dilute form, for example one part of the remedy to 50,000 parts of water.

Homeopathy is the second most widely used system of medicine in the world.

This success is due to several factors:

• Homeopathy is extremely effective. When the correct remedy is taken results can be rapid, complete and permanent.

Is there a catch…?

Prescribing the right homeopathic remedy takes a little more time and patience than it does using conventional medicine. The remedy needs to match the symptoms that you are displaying; there is no such thing as a standard homeopathic headache remedy. In order to match the remedy with your condition the homeopath needs to know, where it occurs, what brings it on, what aggravates it, your state of mind and any other symptoms you may be experiencing.

As there are hundreds of remedies it may be necessary to order yours from a homeopathic pharmacy in which case your remedy will be sent to you in the post.

How long will I need treatment for?

This depends upon what the problem is. In acute problems i.e. bruises, sprains or ear infections homeopathy can work quite quickly and the problem can be resolved in one or two appointments. However, for chronic illnesses the recovery time will depend upon the nature of the illness and how long it has been present. This is something that we can discuss at your first appointment.

I am taking medicine prescribed by my GP will the homeopathic remedies interfere with this?

No it is very unlikely that the homeopathic remedies will interfere with your medication. However, if you are taking medication this may mean that the remedies will take longer to act. Homeopaths treat many people who are already taking medicine from their GP.

It is very safe and can be used effectively by everyone from babies and children to adults including women during pregnancy. When prescribed appropriately, homeopathic remedies are safe, non-toxic and non-addictive.

Sometimes, there is a slight worsening of symptoms as the body begins to heal itself. This does not usually last long and afterwards there is an improvement in health. There may not be any aggravation of symptoms at all.

The first consultation usually lasts approximately 1-1 ½ hours follow up appointments last between 30-40 minutes.
